Stealth Scarlet

I had the pleasure of joining Tom Driscoll on a walk he led down the old Bynum Bridge and along the river trail along the north side of the Haw. We were low on warblers but had some nice looks at Scarlet Tanagers – three of them! There were all yellow with black wings, like overgrown goldfinches in the tree tops. Looking now at my photos, I realize how well-camoflauged these birds are among the green-gold leaves. Beautifully designed, exquisitely made, harbingers of cooler weather sure to come.
