I have noticed lots of birds fattening up lately, gorging themselves on whatever delicacies they can find. At Bond Park, I witnessed a gray catbird scarfing down some ripe berries it had found. You’ll see that photo in the slideshow below.
You’ll also see a great blue heron hunting for a fish. How would you like to have a spear permanently attached to your face? That’s what this bird uses with deadly accuracy. Even though the great blue won’t be flying south, it wants to take advantage of the summer’s bounty to fatten up for winter’s long months.
Hummingbirds have been very active at my feeders of late. They’re fattening up before that long flight south to their tropical wintering grounds. I even saw a hummer chase a Cooper’s hawk over a field, nipping at the big bird’s tail. These brazen little birds are quite colorful, too.
