Orchard Oriole at Bond Park!!!

Was tickled to find an adult male orchard oriole along the creek by the bog this morning. This is a park bird for me, and a welcome surprise for this patch. I hope we’ll see more.

I also saw a female (or immature male?) orchard oriole at Lake Betz recently. Oddly, this bird was hanging out with the agressive Eastern kingbird, which allowed the oriole to stay close to it. I later learned that the orhard oriole likes to stay within the vicinity of a kingbird because it is such a staunch defender of its territory. The kingbird chases away potential predators, benifitting both bird species. Check out this photo of the two birds (click on photo to enlarge it):

Also saw a male Northern parula, second one of the summer, confirming that they must breed here, another surprise given the active suburban area this is. A pair of barred owls launched from their perches near boardwalk #9 and a family of 4 red-shouldered hawks were flying and calling in the patch behind the tennis courts. The resident wood thrush was calling there, too.

Here’s a photo of an owl that I saw:

44 species is my best summer total.
