Warbly Day at Bond Park

I resurrected the day with the early birds this morning here in the heart of suburbia. The strains of an old hymn at a nearby sunrise service mixed with more melodius song coming from the bog.

I encountered 9 warbler species this fine morning. Most were heard only, but I did manage to lay my eyes on the blue-winged, yellowthroat, yellow-rumped, and black-throated blue. The blue-winged took 20 minutes of stealth and patience before it emerged from its tangly den for about a 20-second look. I think that warbler is my new favorite 🙂

By the way, the blue-winged and black-throated as well as a N. parula and an incessant wood thrush were all in the same area behind the bog. You can get there from the Oxxford Hunt swim pool parking lot. Locate the dumpster, cross over the creek near it, walk with the water flow toward the bog. The trail is not maintained. Poison ivy abounds. Wear appropriate clothing and some bug spray.

I was surprised also to hear a red-breasted nuthatch near boardwalk #10. Seems rather late for him to be here.
