39 birds at Bond

Michael and I birded Bond Park and found a lot of variety. Michael’s sharp eyes spotted a red-tailed hawk on a log in the woods below the dam. The bird peeled off pieces of a gray squirrel as we watched. Michael’s keen eyes also picked up an eastern phoebe by the creek on the east side of the lake trail. Lots of hooded mergansers today, and for the first time, a couple of ruddy ducks at the south end.
After Michael left, I went back to the site of RT hawk meal and found only the entrails of the squirrel, the carcass having been carted off. Then I saw 2 or 3 song sparrows in the grass at the base of the dam. One of them looked like a fox sparrow but I’m not sure (need more experience, I guess). I approached the bird very slowly and was surprised it allowed me to venture to within ~15 feet. A fungal-like growth appeared on both of its feet, disfiguring them. At the other end of the dam, another eastern phoebe.
On the hike back to the house, nearly 60 cedar waxwings decorated a bare tree in the neighbor’s yard and a 2nd-of-the-season purple finch made a long appearance in my backyard.
A great day of birding!
